Hyaluronic Acid Filler Treatment Information (Patient-Friendly)

What is hyaluronic acid filler and how does it work?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is a gel-like injectable substance used to restore lost volume, enhance facial features, and smooth lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the body that helps keep the skin hydrated and plump. When injected, filler adds support and volume beneath the skin, creating a fuller, smoother, and more youthful appearance.

How long does hyaluronic acid filler last?

Results are visible immediately after treatment, although some swelling may be present initially. Most patients see their final results after 1–2 weeks once swelling has resolved. Depending on the product used, treatment area, and individual metabolism, results typically last 6–18 months, and sometimes longer.

Common treatment areas include:

  • Lips

  • Cheeks

  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)

  • Marionette lines (lines extending from the corners of the mouth)

  • Chin enhancement

  • Jawline contouring

  • Under-eye hollows (tear troughs)

  • Temples

  • Nose reshaping (non-surgical rhinoplasty)

  • Fine lines around the mouth

Potential side effects

Most side effects are mild and temporary and may include:

  • Redness at the injection site

  • Swelling

  • Bruising

  • Tenderness or soreness

  • Mild itching

  • Temporary lumps or firmness

Less common side effects may include:

  • Prolonged swelling

  • Asymmetry

  • Delayed inflammatory reactions

  • Infection

  • Migration of filler from the treatment area

Rare but serious risks

Although uncommon, filler injections carry a risk of vascular occlusion, which occurs when filler blocks a blood vessel. This can reduce blood flow to the surrounding tissue and requires immediate medical attention.

Symptoms may include:

  • Severe or worsening pain

  • Skin turning pale, white, gray, or dusky

  • Blotchy or net-like discoloration of the skin

  • Delayed capillary refill (skin color does not quickly return after pressure is applied)

  • Vision changes or vision loss

If any of these symptoms occur, contact your provider immediately or seek emergency medical care.

Post Injection Care

Post-treatment care

To help minimize swelling and bruising and optimize results:

  • Avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated areas unless instructed by your provider.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours.

  • Avoid excessive heat, including saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, and prolonged sun exposure for 24–48 hours.

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours, as it may increase bruising.

  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated the first night if swelling is present.

  • Stay hydrated and follow any specific instructions provided by your injector.

  • Ice packs may be used intermittently to help reduce swelling and discomfort.

When should I contact my provider?

Contact your provider if you experience:

  • Significant or worsening swelling

  • Increasing pain

  • Signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever)

  • Uneven swelling that continues to worsen

  • Skin discoloration

  • Any vision changes

Can filler be dissolved?

One advantage of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they can typically be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if adjustments are needed or if a complication occurs.

Dissolving existing filler may be recommended before adding new product to achieve desired results. Provider has the right to refuse service.

Hyaluronic acid fillers provide temporary enhancement and volume restoration. Maintenance treatments may be recommended periodically to maintain your desired results.
